Anil Chaudhary aged 67, had a small patch on his right foot about 33 years ago. He did not take any treatment for the same for 2 years. After 2 years he found out that the patch is growing and it has spread to the lateral part of the right foot. He also had swelling in both feet, and also started to have sensory loss on his right foot, which forced him to take treatment from a local skin specialist at his home town Malda.

He was then given monotherapy which he continued for 4 years. As a result of this treatment there was no further sensory loss.

About 25 years ago, he got injured by a nail, which turned into a non-healing ulcer. He took treatment from a private organization but the ulcer kept on recurring. As a result of this recurrent ulcer his right foot got deformed. He suffered from the ulcer till 2006. He was then referred to The Leprosy Mission Kolkata by the attending doctor. His neighbours also bothered him a lot for his ulcers.

He was also not doing any work to run his family which consisted of 2 daughters and wife. So he became dependent on his brothers for financial help. His daughter also used to give tuitions which also helped them to earn money for his family. He came to Kolkata with the intention of undergoing amputation as he was frustrated from the ulcer. He also felt bad at it smelled badly and also looked dirty. He was admitted here for 6 months, during which his all expenses were borne by the hospital. When his ulcer healed he was discharged. He went back home but still could not continue his work as ulcer occurred again.

He became so frustrated that he again came back in November 2010 for amputation of his right leg. This time the plan of treatment was different. We at the hospital decided to heal his ulcer first with below knee Plaster of Paris application and when the ulcer healed he was operated to correct the deformed foot. The surgery result is very good. Now he is able to keep his foot straight. He has been also given special footwear that will prevent him from getting ulcer. He is also very happy with the results.

He now intends to go home and start his business if he is provided with some financial help.
